What I learned
Three points that helped me in this exercise are that It is fine to not overcomplicate the use of contrast to create emphasis. Any detail can be used to create emphasis and not forcing contrast will make the emphasis better. I also learned that contrast is more than tone (black/white), it can also be used in motion. It is also important that you can always add and take things away in artwork to create emphasis.
Creating Emphasis
The contrast that I used in the artwork helped make the focal point (bird) stand out more. I didn’t want to use brighter colors to avoid the negative space overpowering the positive space. I also used line elements to draw focus onto the bird which the lines are pointing the bird which is the focal point. Another thing that I added was a little glow on the bird to contrast the darker background which made the bird pop.
Focal Point add Message
The focal point helped the message that I was trying to present by making sure that the viewer’s eyes were focused on the object that was part of my message. Since the message was finding the spell in the book, I wanted the viewer to focus on the message by looking at the focal point. I believed that the message was successful because the contrast and design elements that I added helped the focal point be more expressive in the artwork.
